New Photoshop alternative for Linux - Pixeluvo...

As an avid photographer, I was somewhat dismayed that there is pretty much no commercial photo editing software for Linux.

Gimp is awesome, but doesn't support RAW files natively. Many RAW editors for Linux appear clunky and, to my mind, don't seem to render properly. Bibble (now, Corel's AfterShot Pro) is a worthy candidate but lacks without layering options.

Until yesterday I was starting to think I might need a new hobby, because if I couldn't find a half-way decent Linux alternative... Well, who wants to go with Microsoft again?

Last night I opened my Ubuntu Software Center (instead of Google), and I found this gem. Pixeluvo (http://www.pixeluvo.com/). The trial version is free (though you need an Ubuntu One account to download it), or just grab the .deb from scrolling down their homepage. From what I've seen of it so far, it's completely worth the US$34+VAT price tag, which represents excellent value for money!

Whilst proprietry software, the dev is keen for constructive feedback and suggestions.

Check out their website. If you're a keen photographer looking for a native Photoshop alternative/substitute, this could well be for you.

Oh, and it plays very well with my newly installed Cinnamon 2.0 on top of Ubuntu Gnome 13.10 install!

remember that proprietary != closed source.

Also a 'closed source' helps the developper support an official version and be sure that the user hasn't modified the code.
Hence why you find a lot of software available in mutliple licenses.

I probably don't need to spell it out here more than that.

The fact that the developer has packaged a .deb is a good demonstration that s/he is trying to support open source stuff, so good for them.

Interesting, at first sight it looks as if it has potential. But, my initial play seems to suggest that the crop function only allows you to crop to a pre-defined pattern. What I mean by this is that I don't seem to be able to adjust the vertical or horizontal crop, without the other dimensions being adjusted at the same time.
Am I being dumb here?

No you're not being dumb at all!

If you click on the crop tool (left hand side of screen), you can choose the amount you wish to crop, in pixels, on from the bottom of the screen.

However, It might be easier to use the selection tool instead, mark out the area to be retained inside the selection. Then go image>crop to selection.

I might have a chat to the vendor an see whether he can add some more crop options, like a dragable bar and possibly allow to change the aspect ratio for cropping too.

Great to see new software for image editing.

I couldn't find the info on their website, do you know if it supports color depths of more than 8 bits? For editing my raws I'm using Darktable, it's wonderful but doesn't have layers so I go to gimp for that but it's limited to 8 bits. Need to upgrade from 12.04 to get the beta...

I just checked out the video they have on the front page, looks like there are some handy tools and then some... buttons that promise to make my photos look like art? I guess I need those

I really wished Adobe had a port of Lightroom and Photoshop for Linux. I would be all over this.. Currently this one reason alone is why I now purchase Macs..
