Shortcut creation in Ubuntu 13.10

Hi,

I am trying to create apps shortcut by drag-drop on desktop, but it says "The specified location is not supported".

Is this with unity desktop?

If so, why not just start the application from the dash menu, then right click on the icon for that app in the launchbar and choose "Lock to launchbar"

I don't use unity but that is what the users always suggest. If you must have a launcher or shortcut on your desktop I think you will find it easiest to copy the launchers you want from /usr/share/applications to your Desktop folder.
