Question Transmission Fails to Download Files in Torrent

    Hey,

This is the first time in a while for me (I was Bobby McGee in the pre-open ID forum days). I put Ubuntu GNU/Linux 13.10 on a few days ago--dual booting with an HP win 7 laptop. 64bit, 6gigs RAM, 500GB HDD, etc.

In both Ubuntu and Wind'oh!z, I cannot get torrents to work. I.e., the files within torrents fail to download even when there are lots of seeders.

I had a MacBook Pro last week and it was stolen, but the torrents still worked. I am using Comcast Ethernet (i.e., my computer is plugged into my modem via a cord) and while I know Comcast is not a fan of net neutrality I do know that downloading large files through torrents worked on an Apple machine. So why not in Windows or GNU/Linux?

In particular I'm trying to download Ubuntu through a torrent--the daily build.

Thanks in advance! Have a good week!

Still looking for an answer. Thanks in advance!

I don't think you will ever have success downloading a daily build .iso file using a torrent client; I do not think there are any torrent files to use in the client to start with. This is probably because there will never be enough seeders to make the daily build downloads worth trying. How exactly are you attempting to do this; where did your ubuntu-daily-build.iso.torrent file that you need to run with a torrent client come from?

Once the final version (of 14.04?) is released a torrent will definitely be the best way to get it, as the servers for ubuntu will be overwhelmed at the start, just as they always are.

Is it just the daily build that will not work; what about other torrent downloads?

I've tried other torrents--mostly music, for what it's worth--with absolutely NO success.

    So yeah, any ideas?

Firewall blocking the port needed for torrents?

Re: Transmission Fails to Download Files in Torrent

I don't think so. I didn't install or enable a firewall manually, so I doubt that's the issue.

Is there a way to confirm this? Will I have to confirm on both OSs?

    Thanks!

Re: Transmission Fails to Download Files in Torrent

I tested the ports, and they're open--i.e., the ones used by torrent clients.

    What to do?

Is your modem a modem only, or a modem/router. In other words do you get a public IP directly on eth0?

If your modem is a router (or using a router) you either need UPnP enabled on router and torrent program, or forward port 51413 to LAN IP of Linux. I have been using Transmission with port forwarding (static LAN IP) on my DSL gateway for some time, downloading and serving various Ubuntu and Raspberry Pi releases.
