will not boot even after boot-repair (using old sony vaio)

I'm a complete beginner with Ubuntu.

I am using an old Sony Vaio C22. I installed Ubuntu 12.04 and overwrote everything a few days ago. I installed the required updates and the laptop was working fine for about 3 days.

Now Ubuntu won't boot. I turn the laptop on and it brings me to the GNU Grub screen, where I can choose between 5 choices. All of which does nothing but either spit out a lot of text or go to a black screen with a blinking cursor.

I searched through the forums and tried some fixes:
    - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2063281 : the result I got was a lot of text and Ubuntu still did not load
    - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair : using live USB I installed Boot-Repair, selected recommended repair and restarted without the USD. Still got sent to the GNU Grub screen with the 5 options and the same results.

The following is the boot info script from the Boot Repair that I ran.
Hope you can help me. Thanks.

Re: will not boot even after boot-repair (using old sony vaio)

If you get to grub menu it has started to boot. Boot-Repair usually only fixes you to that point.

In Disks or Disk Utility, when you click on drive what does Smart Status say about drive?

It may need fsck. Did system get a hard shutdown?

#From liveCD so everything is unmounted, swap off if necessary, change example shown with partition sdb1 to your partition(s)
#e2fsck is used to check the ext2/ext3/ext4 family of file systems. -p trys fixes where response not required
    sudo e2fsck -C0 -p -f -v /dev/sdb1
#if errors: -y auto answers yes for fixes needing response, also see man e2fsck
    sudo e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sdb1

    Hi oldfred,
Thanks for your reply and sorry about the delay. I did the e2fsck and got the below results. I restarted and did not load from USB, I still got the black screen. Also, Disk Utility shows that my hard drive has some bad sectors.

Re: will not boot even after boot-repair (using old sony vaio)

You only have one formatted partition, sda1. You cannot run fsck on sda which is a drive nor on the sda2 which is an extended partition and not formatted.

If bad sectors is growing that can be an issue, many drives have a few bad sectors.
Does Disk utility say drive is ok, or near failure?

If you get grub menu then you are starting to boot. Can you choose recovery mode or second entry in grub menu? It may just be a driver issue.

Re: will not boot even after boot-repair (using old sony vaio)

Can't find anything on Disk Utility that says that my drive is near failure. SMART Status just shows as green and says "Disk has a few bad sectors".

As for the grub menu, I also tried the recovery mode but all I got was a black screen with a lot of text. I waited for an hour and ubuntu did not load. I wrote down the last line:

[8.096704] init: Failed to spawn friendly-recovery post-stop process: unable to execute: no such file or directory

If it is a drive issue, as you mentioned, how do I check which drivers I'm missing?

When it stops like that is often is not the last line, but several lines above. Does it show any errors?
Or something not mounting or not loading?
