Re: HOWTO: Configuring Logitech mice in Ubuntu 6.06: New Guide

Hi there, firstly thanks for the guide, found it excellent for setting up my MX700 on my laptop.

I have a query though, becuase I only use my MX700 at home, when I logged on to my laptop at work this morning obviously the configuration was invalid as I don't have that mouse plugged in, and I had to revert to my backup of xorg.conf from the console

Is there any way to configure things so that I can load the MX700 settings when I'm at home, and not load them when I'm elsewhere?

Try putting back your old mouse config along with the new one (make sure the names of the mice are different though though and make sure they're both in the serverlayout section) and changing Option "CorePointer" to Option "SendCoreEvents" "True" in the new mouse config.

    Yeah.

This is how my xorg.conf looks like:
    Code:
    Section "ServerLayout"
            ...
            InputDevice "Synaptics Touchpad" "AlwaysCore"
            InputDevice "Logitech Mouse"
            InputDevice "Configured Mouse"
    EndSection
            ...
    Section "InputDevice"
            Identifier "Configured Mouse"
            Driver "mouse"
            Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
            Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
            Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
            Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
    EndSection

    Section "InputDevice"
            Identifier "Logitech Mouse"
            Driver "evdev"
            Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
            Option "Device" "/dev/input/event8"
    EndSection

    Section "InputDevice"
            Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad"
            Driver "synaptics"
            Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
            Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
            Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
#config by user roots of Ubuntu forums
            Option "LeftEdge" "1700"
            Option "RightEdge" "5300"
            Option "TopEdge" "1700"
            Option "BottomEdge" "4200"
            Option "FingerLow" "25"
            Option "FingerHigh" "30"
            Option "MaxTapTime" "180"
            Option "MaxTapMove" "220"
            Option "VertScrollDelta" "100"
            Option "MinSpeed" "0.09"
            Option "MaxSpeed" "0.18"
            Option "AccelFactor" "0.0015"
            Option "SHMConfig" "on"
            Option "HorizScrollDelta" "0"
    EndSection
It works with the configurations I tried:
    * touchpad only / no external mouse
    * touchpad + logitech mouse

Re: HOWTO: Configuring Logitech mice in Ubuntu 6.06: New Guide

I followed this guide several months ago, and it worked on Edgy flawlessly. However, I did a fresh edgy install, and now I'm running into problems.

First, X is crashing once I edit the xorg file. I have event4-9 open, and I've tried all of them with no success.

    Second, when I run
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install xvkbd xbindkeys
    , I get this:

    Code:
ben@BG-Desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install xvkbd xbindkeys
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
Package xvkbd is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package xvkbd has no installation candidate
I'd love to get this working again, but I'm unsure what to do. It seems strange to me because it worked perfectly the first time around on Edgy, and no it's not working at all.

Thanks for any help in advance.

Make sure you have the universe & multiverse repositories enabled (in /etc/sources.lst or via synaptic).

Yes, I do have all the repositories enabled. This seems very strange to me... I've not seen anything like this before.

First of all, I have a combo of keyboard and mouse, both wireless, model MX 3200 from Logitech, and I finally got the mouse working with udev and some tweaks on the xorg.conf.
    My udev rule is (19-local.rules):
    Code:
    KERNEL=="event[0-9]*", SYSFS{../name}=="Logitech USB Receiver",SYSFS{../device/bInterfaceNumber}=="01", NAME="input/event9"
Now, let's see the xorg.conf. First, I added a line on the section modules, in order to load "evdev" (as stated in de man page of evdev):
    Code:
    Section "Module"
    	Load	"i2c"
    	Load	"bitmap"
    	Load	"ddc"
    	Load	"dri"
    	Load	"extmod"
    	Load	"freetype"
    	Load	"glx"
    	Load	"int10"
    	Load	"type1"
    	Load	"vbe"
    	Load	"evdev"
    EndSection
Then, I modified the input device for the mouse:
    Code:
    Section "InputDevice"
    	Identifier	"Configured Mouse"
    	Driver "evdev"
    	Option "CorePointer"
    	Option "Name" "Logitech USB Receiver"
    	Option "Phys" "usb-0000:00:02.1-1/input1"
    	Option "Device" "/dev/input/event9"
    	Option "AbsoluteScreen"	"0"
    	#Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
    	#Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
    	#Option "Emulate3Buttons"	"true"
    EndSection
    --etc--
    .

Worked perfectly with my LX3 Optical Mouse on Edgy for the first section. Thanks for the guide. I was wondering ifyou can set xbindkeys to be less touchy. IE, slighting hitting my the forward button will send me forward a page, but if I touch too long it'll blast me all the way forward. Also on edgy you can do

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install lomoco
Thanks for the guide and any future help.

If you are using xvkbd in an xbindkeys rule, you can set xvkbd's repeat delays etc. The xvkbd manual tells you how to do it.
    echo -e "\x6f\x61\x73\x61\x6c\x6f\x6e\x65\x6e\x40\x67 \b\x6d\x61\x69\x6c\x2e\x63\x6f\x6d"
    It compiles! Ship it!
