There is a project that relies on Windows malware running under wine http://zerowine.sourceforge.net/

By default when I installed wine on 12.04, all files were visible to wine as / was mapped to a drive (Z: I think).

Fair point, but random email attachements still pose an issue.

Then OP should say "no need for antivirus" instead, since regardless whether Linux is virus free Av available are pretty useless and pointless anyhow.

It would be odd if one gets an attachment in a format that only wine can open (like an .exe) and still clicks to open it.

Also to prevent the click happy user from opening random email attachments you would need to have an AV running ALL the time in the background so it can pop up with warnings or seize the content of the attachment before the user can click it. It is how it works in Windows (and I don't think such thing even exists in Linux as all av scanners that run on Linux scan on demand). I think a little caution and common sense would be much more effective.

I started using Ubuntu since 8.04. Never faced any kind of infection but lately I am noticing that Firefox is sometimes becoming a bit unstable while browsing. I have to close and reopen it and it works fine again.

But since there is no malware checking tool I am not exactly sure whats causing this.
