Upgrade to 13.10 cut battery life by 80%

I'm running Xubuntu on an old Thinkpad X61. I got a solid 4 hours of battery life under 13.04. When i upgraded to 13.10, the battery life dropped to around 40 minutes.

Suspend mode also seems to drain the battery much more quickly than before the upgrade. And the machine (not surprisingly) feels like it's running hotter than before.

Can anybody point me to a possible tweak or fix? Thanks!

For anybody having the same problem, i tried rebooting into the previous kernel (3.11.0-13-generic) and the problem seems to have disappeared. Other minor glitches make me think that i may have a corrupted latest kernel (3.11.0-14-generic). My next tactic is going to be reloading the latest kernel, see if that fixes it.
