Question Linux can't detect my VGA driver

Dear UbuntuForums members and guardian angels,
Since I've purchased my new Lenovo U530 laptop, I have been deprived of my daily linux dosage.
Several linux distributions I have tried booting on my laptop have failed to display any visuals on the screen.
E.G For Ubuntu, I hear the familiar "Bu Dum!" sound on boot, but the screen is plain dark.
I'm very confused and I think I can safely blame this on driver support.
Any solution / guidance / ideas would be appreciated.

First try booting using the nomodeset option. When you get the menu screen type F6 then add nomodeset to the end of the line and then boot. See if that works.
