    Question System sees fewer RAM

Hi everyone i am new at the forums of ubuntu
thanks for giving me the oppurtunity to discuss with u a weird
    problem with my computer

Cause of the weird nature of the problem i really dont know which sub-forum was the
    correct in order to post
so if i am in wrong sub-forum please inform me

i will try to explain to you the problem
i want to be patience thanks

I have in my system 4 GB memory ram installed
the BIOS UEFI one sees 4096 which is the correct number
of the total amount of memory

and here the weird thing begins

My Windows (windows 8.1) and Linux 12.04 LTS x64bit sees that i lose about 32 MB of memory
without knowing where it goes at all

    I have done the following

1)Updating Bios at the latest one Motherboard is P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3
2)I have reset the bios by removing the battery and setting everything to default
3)I have remove the vga card (Nvidia GTX 650 Ti) and checking the onboard card which works
4)i have test if computer get confused between the vga cards by increasing the size of the onboard card but no problem with this
5)I have removing and resitting the RAM modules in a different positions with no luck

The computer is open a lot of hours and had not crash i have stress it with heavy multiplayer games
for about 2-3 days nothing suspicious

here are some output from the terminal
    A)Free -M command
    Code:
    :~$ free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
    Mem: 3921 2054 1866 0 52 883
    -/+ buffers/cache: 1119 2802
    Swap: 4060 0 4060
    :~$
    B)Dmesg output

    Re: System sees fewer RAM

That'll be in use for shadowing the BIOS / for your on board graphics card, you never get the full amount. You can see how much is installed with
    Code:
    sudo dmidecode -t memory | egrep -o 'Size: [0-9]+ .*'

    Re: System sees fewer RAM

I suspect that this apparent loss of RAM is due to differences in presenting the size of the units that RAM is measured in. Please read the heading Unit Multiples in this link

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byte

I admit that I do not understand this myself. I take it to mean that manufacturers use a slightly different system of measurement than computer developers. The Manufacturers choose to use a method that makes it seem that we are getting something larger than the computer experts would say we have. It is the difference between using Decimal and Binary as the measuring stick. For Example.

1000 Kilo Bytes in Decimal is the same actual size as 1024 Kilo Bytes in Binary. If a utility says we have 1000 Kilo Bytes when we are told elsewhere that we have 1024 Kilo Bytes we think we have lost 24 Kilo Bytes somewhere. We have not. When we get to Giga Bytes the differences amount to Mega Bytes.

I did say that I did not understand this, did I not?

    Regards.

It is a machine. It is more stupid than we are. It will not stop us from doing stupid things.

@btindie: yes Windows OS said that Bios Reversed Memory is 32,9 and in Resource Monitor Says 33MB i just noticed the whole thing when i run a game which complain to me with this error but still it weird cause i am running non-onboard VGA Card

and the two other computers i have says Bios Reversed Memory :2 MB each one of them

Also Ubuntu System Monitor Says : 3.8GiB

@grahammechanical : Thanks for the link i will give it a shot

So my system is ok nothing to worry about i can update the system
with more memory and an SSD i want to?

thanks at both of u for ur information i appreciate it

    Re: System sees fewer RAM

Luckily the memory multiplier difference (1Gib = 1024Mib versus 1GB = 1000MB) only applies to hard drives, when it comes to memory such approach would be impossible (or at least horribly impractical) due to how computers work and therefore 1024 is the only multiplier ever used (regardless if it's presented using GiB or GB as the unit).

Anyway, the difference between available and installed memory comes from multiple things, the already mentioned BIOS reserved memory used for communication between the computer's various components etc, any RAM that might be shared with the graphics card, and finally the space Linux kernel itself takes in the memory once the system is booted.

    Re: System sees fewer RAM

My linux boxes usually report a bigger difference than that. How much difference depends on your hardware. It's not wasted, but also not reported.

You should be able to add RAM up to the limits of your motherboard and budget, whichever is smaller. I can personally vouch for 64-bit installs up to 32g without trouble.
