Gnome 3 in Debian not working

Earlier today I installed some software updates through Debian's Software Updater Application. Everything went fine and it said I should reboot the machine for some updates to take effect. When Debian booted though and I logged in with gnome3 (which works since I previously installed drivers for my graphics card) it would show my desktop icons but he gnome interface wouldn't show up. I rebooted and selected gnome classic and it worked, so im just wondering if it was an update error and if there is any way to fix it. Thanks All
