    (13.10) Intel graphics driver fails to manage HD 4600 on HP Split x2

    I am using Ubuntu 13.10 with kernel 3.11.0-13-generic. I am using the nomodeset kernel option so I don't have a black screen on boot. I have also renamed vesa_drv.so so at least the fbdev driver will manage the card and xorg will start. I have tried booting with acpi=off with no change. Glxinfo reports "Gallium" as the driver. I would like to be able to play games on this laptop so I would like to use the Intel driver. I have included my Xorg.0.log. Thanks for any help.

    Are Intel graphics not well supported on Linux? This is my first experience with them and it is not going well so far. My understanding is that this graphics chip has been out for a while. This device has only the 4600, no switchable graphics. I would like the ability to control screen brightness to reduce eye strain and improve battery life. I would also like to be able to turn the screen off so I can use the device on battery. I would also like to play games with it.

    Intel Haswell - Linux support June 2013

    Newer Intel seemed to need this:
    acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor

    Some other Intel chip settings:

    i915.i915_enable_rc6=1

    Force Intel Video mode as boot parameter in grub menu - change to your screen size
    video=1280x1024-24@60
    and if that doesn't work you can try
    video=VGA-1:1280x1024-24@60

    These are different brands, but you should have similar Intel settings.

    Turned NIC (Integrated Network Interface Controller) off and then booted off of USB. Was NOT an issue with any Linux distro just a quirk of the laptop.
    Am now running 13.10 daily and everything works. Also had to stick with EFI boot ON, Secure Boot disabled. Wouldn't boot off of any media or HDD when mode set to CSM.

    I used to have lots of issues with nVidia and edited xorg a lot, but in last few years have not even looked at an xorg file to know what is correct.
    Do you have some entry twice. That may be correct if two monitors but they have to be different somehow.

    It seems like the problems in the log are because of nomodeset. While looking that up I found that nomodeset cannot be used with the Intel driver. The problem now is that booting without nomodeset eventually turns the monitor off. Tapping the brightness key will cause it to start flickering every 3 seconds.

    Edit: Problem fixed!!!
    I used this entire line but the key here is probably the acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor . Remember vendor is case sensitive!!!
    Code:
    i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor video=1366x768-24@60
    Screen off and brightness controls work too.

    I have seen users post one or two of the settings, but did not know you might need all of them.

    Glad you got it working.
