Unhappy Installing an application from a .tgz file

    Hello,

I have downloaded an application (a game names Oolite) from an alternative source then ubuntu application store (or whatever it is called) and have received a .tgz file....
On the contrary to .deb files theese do not install the same way, it opens a windowwith the extracted contents, not the application....

How should I proceed from here ?

    Jack

Look in the UbuntuSoftwareCenter. You can install it from there. So, don't use the tgz file. You don't need it.
Look always first in the SoftwareCenter before you download something from the internet.

I know nothing of the game you downloaded, but in general either within the extracted files, or on the games web page should be instructions on how to install it.
In the extract files it might show up as readme, or a simple text file like install.txt.

    +1

open README or INSTALL file from the tarball, for install instructions

As stated by Heir4c, best to install from Ubuntu Software Center.

If you want to install that downloaded tgz file you can open your filemanager and a terminal.
You drag the tgz file into the terminal and click Enter.
    Now it start the installation.
