    12.04 browser stuttering

I installed Ubuntu version 9 on an old computer - Asus mobo, 2.4 Ghz Intel Pentium CPU, maxed out at
1 Gb memory (2 X 512) Nvidia Graphics card ( not sure how much video memory). Installation was a breeze, and Ubuntu ran flawlessly. However, lately had been getting error messages "browser out of date" when using Foxfire browser, especially on Gmail. So, I did a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04.
Since then, the Foxfire browser "stutters" - doing a mouseclick freezes the diaplay for five seconds.
    This is very annoying!
What is surprising is that I am also running Ubuntu 12.04 on an Acer netbook, which has a less powerful/slower Atom processor, also has only 1 Gb memory, and less powerful graphics chip, yet it has no problems.
Can anyone suggest the cause/solution to the "stuttering" on the Pentium 4 system?

Try running a live CD/USB of either 12.04 or 13.10 and see if you have the same trouble.
