    Re: Lightdm & Desktop

I put a new 14.04 install on same drive, very little changed from default & it's actually gotten faster than prev (which was really 13.10, set up & using)
So bootchart shows @ 9 sec's, the biggest gain would be systemd-udevd & wait for root, prev. about 8 sec, now down to 3. The rest is pretty much the same.

    Pardon my ignorance but
is this a fresh 14.04 install
are you using this as a server (I see some things loading in your install that aren't here

@tad1073 , I have to admit, I'm a bit confused too, are you running the server version or the desktop? I see you have:

    • Apache2
    • Mysql
    • Samba

    Plus something called miniserver.pl.

That being said, the server components shouldn't take all that much extra time to load, but I know it does make a difference. I have two servers here, one running the full LAMP stack plus Samba and NFS, and the other is just a minidlna server. The minidlna server running on an Atom cpu with 1GiB of ram and 2 5400 RPM laptop drives using LVM boots in about 10 seconds, while my main server running on an Intel E5400 cpu with 4GiB ram and 6 various sized hard drives in a jbod array boots up in about 15 seconds.

Neither run a gui of any sort, so they boot faster than a comparable system running the desktop version.

I am running the desktop version with the lamp stack. I am hosting my own website and have xbmc synced to the computer in the living room, as for the miniserver.pl, I have no clue what that is.

    Re: Lightdm & Desktop

I have reverted back to 13.04 and my boot time has significantly decreased so that tells me that is something to do with 13.10 and 14.04.

    Re: Lightdm & Desktop

I did a clean install of 13.10 for the second time and my boot time is what it should be now but Istill don't know what the problem was.

I went ahead and updated to 14.04 and no problems with boot time.

    Re: Lightdm & Desktop

I switched back to 13.04 then installed the 3.12.0-031200 and concluded that it has something to do with the kernel because when I booted into 3.12 I had the same results as before, how to I go about notifying the kernel devs?

    Re: Lightdm & Desktop

You create a bug report against the kernel by using the following command:

    Code:
    apport linux
One of the Ubuntu kernel team will get back to you and have you run some tests to determine what the problem is. It may entail installing several different kernels, so you have to be willing to do the work to get the problem solved.
