Wireless constantly disconnects (Access point changed)

    Hello everyone
I'm having a problem with the wireless in my laptop. It hardly works, it may work for some minutes but after that it disconnects and then after a minute or so it reconnects but that disconnect/reconnect process is not shown as a notification i.e. my internet simply stops working. I know that the problem is only in my computer because I'm currently using my tethering from my smartphone and the internet works perfect. After some testing I discovered that the access point of my wireless connection changes when my internet connection breaks, here is what I did

    ------ (With working internet)
    camo@Studio-1458:~$ iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.

    wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"LSK"
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: 9C:C7:A6:4C:CE:BE
    Bit Rate=6.5 Mb/s Tx-Power=19 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr: off Fragment thr: off
    Power Management: off
    Link Quality=32/70 Signal level=-78 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:2 Missed beacon:0

    eth0 no wireless extensions.

    ------- (With broken internet)
    lo no wireless extensions.

    wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"LSK"
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: 80:1F:02:C0:CA:3C

Thanks in advance for the help

Welcome to the forums card06 !

Please follow the "Wireless Script" link in my signature, download and run the script as per instructions there, and post back the report it generates. It will give us a comprehensive information of your overall wireless setup.

While posting the outputs, please use the 'Code' box. It preserves its formatting and makes your post cleaner, compact and more readable. Follow the "Using Code Tags" link in my signature to see how.

Re: Wireless constantly disconnects (Access point changed)

    Hello Varun
As you requested I ran the script in the link that you gave me and here is the display. I think I should also add something else that I noticed: I moved recently and in my new flat they use some kind of "repeaters" devices for the internet. I noticed that if I turn off the closest one to my position, and move my computer to another position, then the problem with the internet diminish but it doesn't disappear. I hope this information would be helpful.

Re: Wireless constantly disconnects (Access point changed)

Your setup doesn't look normal and definitely not at defaults. I am mostly bothered by the error/warning messages in dmesg part, but lets first get some usual suspects out of the way -

    1) Do you have admin access to the router/access-points? If yes, please change the encryption to pure WPA2-PSK (AES/CCMP). No WPA/WPA2 mixed mode, no TKIP.

    2) Secondly, why did you need to blacklist the "wl" driver? Is it currently installed? Check with -
    Code:
    dpkg -l | grep bcmwl
    modinfo wl
Does any of these return any output? If yes, purge that driver -
    Code:
    sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
..and remove that blacklist file, we don't need it if everything else is as it should be -
    Code:
    sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-local.conf
    3) Thirdly, the udev rules file contains the entry which may be confusing the system, even if momentarily. So remove it, it'll be auto-generated immediately or at next boot, with only desired entries -
    Code:
    sudo rm /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
    4) And lastly, try telling the Network Manager to only associate with a fixed, desired access-point by saving the access-point's MAC address in its "BSSID" field.
(Network Manager > Edit Connection > "Wireless" tab > edit your connection > "Wireless" tab > save AP's MAC address in "BSSID" field)
This is not really a 'fix' (binding NM to a specific AP), but let's just see if it helps.

About the dmesg part quoted above, did you try any version of brcmsmac (or brcm80211) driver from another source? The path /build... doesn't exist in a default setup.

Please answer above and try what is suggested. Let me know it helps or not and accordingly we may take further steps.

Re: Wireless constantly disconnects (Access point changed)

    Hello Varun
I would like to answer your request.
    1) I don't have admin access to the router/access points

    2) I didn't blacklisted the "wl" driver, actually this is the first time I touch the wireless configuration through the command line. Regarding the driver, when I started with Ubuntu, I installed version 10.04 and in that version my wireless didn't work, so I installed proprietary software using the "additional drivers" software provided by Ubuntu for the Broadcom drivers, after that my drivers worked, nevertheless when I moved here my wireless stopped working so I decided to uninstall it and then it started to "work" but with this connection problem. Regarding the third point, in 2) I removed that blacklist file as you requested.

    3) I removed the udev rules as you requested.

    4) I edited my wireless configuration to bind it only with a specific access point.

My internet is working perfectly so far, nevertheless as you said binding my NM to a specific access point is not really what I would like to do as a solution. Do you have any additional advice for me?

This is the result of re-running the script that you gave me the link to.

As long as it works for you, I have none. The only downside of this workaround is that you will need to manually change the BSSID everytime you change your location and need to connect to a different access-point with the same name (SSID).

But if the current access-point covers all the area (with reasonably strong signal) that you may be using this laptop within, then this is a non-issue and you don't need to worry about anything.

As a side note, those awkward messages are still present in dmesg. But if your connection is fine, they may just be harmless debugging messages, although they are making me uncomfortable.

If (and ONLY IF) the problem returns, there are three things I may suggest -

    1) Try installing a backported driver. This involves downloading and compiling a package to be able to use it.
    2) Upgrade to the raring kernel to get the latest driver which seems to work better when the older one doesn't.
    3) Last resort, install the proprietary "wl" driver - a version that suits your kernel and is itself not buggy.

Let me know if you wish to try any of these, although if it is working fine I'd recommend to leave it as it is. You will automatically get the best drivers when you upgrade to newer versions.

If you wish to upgrade to the latest versions (of the driver, or whole kernel, although nothing is guaranteed to work better), I'd be happy to assist. If the current one is already satisfactory enough for you, please consider marking the thread as [SOLVED].
