    Is xfwm4 running?
    Code:
    ps -ef | grep xfwm4 | grep -v grep
    If not, try starting it:
    Code:
    xfwm4
Do you get any error messages?

Which Window Manager theme are you using (Settings Manager -> Window Manager -> Style)?

If you change this theme, does it make a difference?

    I think that
    Code:
    ps -ef | grep xfwm4 | grep -v grep
did not work as intended because "|" doesn't run in the order present in the code but simultaneously, if I understand correctly and may result in confusion on occasion. There's more reading on "|" being simultaneous here.

Incidentally, cmcanulty's code "proves" something else: that having multiple desktops and then running the lighter desktop doesn't give the full benefit (in terms of "lightness") as running a computer with just the lighter desktop present. See process 1275 in cmcanulty's ps output. I understand that such a process isn't present in vanilla Xubuntu.

At one point in time, in one of the betas, I noticed that zietgeist got installed.
Zeitgeist is a service which logs the user's activities and events (files
opened, websites visited, conversations held with other people, etc.) and
makes the relevant information available to other applications.
    .
It serves as a comprehensive activity log and also makes it possible to
determine relationships between items based on usage patterns.
    .
This metapackage depends on the Zeitgeist engine and a set of packages
(such as data providers) commonly used together with it.
...it freaked me out and I removed it and catfish (dependency). However, in the final release, its not part of the manifest so I'm guessing that it was removed. Although it brings up an interesting question about which version of 13.10 was installed (beta vs final), I don't think the package itself would cause the issue the OP is facing. The other processes all look normal for a Xubuntu install.

It is a side-issue and most probably unrelated to cmcanulty's losing the window decorations but I mentioned it because troubleshooting may be different for a standalone Xubuntu versus xubuntu-desktop running on a computer with other desktops present; some processes supposedly unique to other desktops may leak over with unexpected results. Pure speculation but seeing that process put it in my mind!

Re: Xubuntu lost alt-tab and mini/maximize button.

I only had xubuntu. After this problem I tried adding xfce4 to see if that would give me an option without this problem but it did nothing. In fact I don't even get an option to log in to xfce4 like I should. I am using clearlooks-phenix-master. Though I tried others and it makes no difference.I didn't use a beta for xubuntu

    Code:
    cmcanulty@gateway:~$ pgrep -l xfwm4
    1134 xfwm4
    cmcanulty@gateway:~$
