To be honest I would continue in to a deeper search to get a full picture of the partition structure. At the moment there is some overlapping of partitions and the data is incomplete. Out of curiosity, what was shown on the previous screen of testdisk? Did it show any partition numbers?

Using your last screen shot for reference hit Enter to continue. It will start a scan of the whole drive. It does not normally scan a partition.
ATM I am scanning the drive on my other computer to guide you. Do not panic if you do not get a quick response to your posts. my scan is about 50% and has been running for about 40 minutes.

Is this an Ultrabook? That uses RAID which confuses things greatly. And the standard desktop installer does not have the RAID drivers although Boot-Repair usually adds them to see the partitions, but grub still does not install correctly as it thinks it should install to RAID when you really want it installed to UEFI (not BIOS).
Partitions will be gpt not MBR(msdos) with Windows 8 booting in UEFI mode with secure boot on.

See more info on Ultrabooks in link in my signature.

Do not use testdisk to rewrite your partitions. You have Intel SRT.

    Lots of info on SRT.

Disable the RAID, it was using the Intel rapid management thingy and telling it to disable the acceleration or the use of the SSD. If you have a different system, just disable the RAID system then install Ubuntu. Once installed you can then re-enable it.
    sudo dmraid -E -r /dev/sda
    sudo dmraid -E -r /dev/sdb
You will need to use the dmraid command prior to running the Ubuntu Installer so that it will be able to see the partitions on the drive because otherwise with the raid metadata in place it will see the drive as part of a raid set and ignore its partitions.

    @ oldfred

Thank you for joining in. That Intel RST was unexpected, however it probably is the reason 'Testdisk' was showing garbage partition info. When I was running it a short while ago my partitions apparently are the Mac HFS file system and the hard drive was in excess of 16 TB in size. Not bad for a 500GB HDD that has never seen a Mac or its OS

    @ Trainer
I have just found out that my laptop has Intel RST as well. I also have to admit that I know next to zero about Raid and its workings. I apologise for nearly destroying your system completely through ignorance.

Take heed of oldfred's advice. He really does know what is going on.

I am now going to hide my head in a bucket and do some more reading.

Re: Ubuntu 13.10 win8 partitoin problem

UEFI with secure boot has greatly complicated installs. With BIOS you only had one choice although sometimes BIOS settings made a difference. Now you may have UEFI with secure boot, UEFI, or BIOS/CSM and they all are somewhat different and often need settings in UEFI/BIOS for an install to work.

Then they implemented the Intel SRT which is not directly supported yet and dual video which nVidia does not directly support on the new Ultrabooks.
So users with Ultrabooks have lots of new issues, but many have managed to work around all of them. But it is not a simple direct install.

Re: Ubuntu 13.10 win8 partitoin problem

How should i now proceed? Should i recover it with ubuntu or with windows?

I don't find any option to repair my partitoins. How can i do that?

Should i repair the MBR with the WIN8 CD?
    with this command "bootrec.exe /fixmbr"?
