ok. i know about that. now do the same with BF3 and BF4 (demo i don't think it's out yet). or perhaps GTA5, latest COD etc.

i know some games have better FPS even under wine. but that still doesn't bypass the problem that :
    1. driver support is still poor in linux
    2. new games are mostly not developed to run natively in linux (sure there are quite a few good ones on kickstater or otherwise, but no major blockbusters which showcase the latest in graphics).

left for dead 2 will soon be 4 years old. the engine it uses is even older.

i htink linux owuld run them all better as long as they got propper support. but at the moment windows seems to be still the go to system for gaming.

The advantage is that you don't have to use a locked restricted platform which costs money.

Wasn't there an official announcement a while back stating that they had one of the L4D games natively running better under Ubuntu than Windows?

Yea, this is the YouTube link referenced here in this thread. But one game doesn't make the entirely of Linux "better" to run games on. There's a lot more going on than just who has the highest frame-rates for a game.

SteamOS is a Linux distro, specifically for gaming. So yes, I believe it is relevant to this topic.

    Windows Diablo 3 Bechmark:
    GFX Temp: 64c-67c
    RAM Usage: 4GB-4.5GB

    Ubuntu 12.04 Diablo 3 Benchmark:
    GFX Temp: 44c-47c
    RAM Usage: 1.5GB Max

Keep in mind I'm using wine to run Diablo 3. You see even better results playing games actually developed to run in linux like TF2.

That alone is worth putting up with poor vendor support.

Re: Advantage of gaming on Linux?

Disadvantage to gaming on Linux? Everything. Almost every PC game runs on Windows. Granted there are a few native Linux PC game titles, Windows outnumbers them. Games for Windows (GFW) games doesn't help this either.

DOSBOX/WINE will only get you so far with Windows-only games, and the ones that do work, might still have bugs or glitches. Virtualization is just like running Windows, so what's the point.
