What is the best Linux distro to use for home built router?

I remember someone mentioning "bss" or "bcs" linux, but I can't remember the specific name of linux version it was to install onto a home built router. If anybody can name the linux version that can run a router. Actually now I think it was Unix not Linux. I remember also that you had to install it onto the router via FTP if that helps.

    thanks,

DD-WRT is Linux based as well, but I have no idea if there suitable versions for home built routers.

    I have a Linux-based Tomato router. When I was on dial-up, I used a single-floppy router (Slackware-based) called Freesco.

pfsense (based on FreeBSD) works very well and has lots of support. I've done two routers with it.

    Debian

It depends on the router but I would recommend Debian if the hardware can handle it.
