    Meerkat doesn't turn on

I've got an old (2010) Meerkat that I use as the "family" box, but my son went to use it this evening, and it didn't turn on - no response to the power switch, at all.

Is there any fuse I should check, or reset switch that needs to be checked before I get out a multi-meter and start checking the power supply and the switch and such? Any other obvious things that I should check?

You should install a supported version of Ubuntu. 10.10 has reached end of life eons ago.

I believe that's the name of the model of the machine I have - a meerkat nettop. Not that I particularly use the model name but I wanted to identify it for this question. I do have a newer version of Ubuntu on it (probably 12.04, but I'm not entirely sure.)

But I really can't upgrade it until I get it turning on again.

    I think it's multi-meter time!

First, remover the battery and unplug and try to power on, to make sure all residual power is gone. Then plug in the power plug, but not the battery. See if it boots. If so, try again with the battery. A shorted battery can cause this.

The Meerkat is a nettop not a netbook, so it doesn't have a removable battery.

Doh! Sorry. In that case, I suspect the power brick. I have seen a lot of bad ones lately.
