    secuono; Hey,

    What are you trying to boot ?
    Alternate install, server install, minimal install, or the desktop install ? and what flavor ?
    I expect the the distro makes a difference as to what is seen at the boot up.

    But there will be a means to edit the boot parameters.

    This is what I did, I downloaded the Lubuntu for regular desktop.
    Trying to find out how to keep it working after the install, since the test only works when the nomodeset is selected. There's also a huge difference when trying to get the internet to work. This is my only pc, so need to figure out how to get it working before I'm stranded and have to downgrade just to come back here to get help...

    Just as an educated guess .. let's say the needed graphic's driver is not available at this time.
    Let's try and load a lower level driver.
    Try this and advise results:

    Boot the liveCD;
    At the purple splash screen (stick figure keyboard emblems at bottom of screen) -> hit any key ->
    Language screen -> escape key to accept the default ->
    Booting options screen -> f6 key (other options) -> arrow down to the preset option(s), in this instance try "nomodeset" -space or enter to accept and then the escape key to exit.
    Enter key to continue the boot process to the GUI desk top;

    Do you now boot to the desk top ? ,,,degraded graphics is OK at this point, can be fixed later.

    just try'n to help

    secuono;

    As you are now able to boot up in the "try ubuntu" mode. Go ahead and play with ubuntu, make sure there are no additional problems.

    If one has a liveCD, one is never stranded...

    Have you done the actual install to hard disk ? Methods differ between liveCD and actual install to load needed drivers .

    I need to know where you are at the present time .

    Nothing is installed, just used the livecd and everything is in a blue theme, nothing looks hard or weird to learn, everything seems standard.

    What should I mess around with?? I use image editing software and internet, sometimes openoffice, that's it. Watching videos never worked in any linux version I've tried, don't really care to watch them on my pc anyway. Things like videos online, fancy websites that use java and such, those don't work in my current version and more than likely won't work in the new one.

    All I need to know is how to install lubuntu so that underscore issue doesn't come up and how to get wireless internet to work. Once those are done, I can worry about fixing sound and such, since I'll have the internet to find the answers.

    secuono; OK !

    Go ahead and install Lubuntu;
    Do you have a wired connection to the net ?
    We gotta have one !
    On the initial install screen DO NOT check "install updates while installing, nor "install 3rd party software" ..we will take care of them later.I have always had problems installing onto older hardware if these options were checked. And do install with the "nomodeset" option. In the real install we will see about installing the needed graphics drivers.
    Wireless is not an area of expertise so will have do be dealt with in another thread, if the drivers are not available when we update the install.

    But we must have an internet connection prior to proceeding.

    else we have no paddle on this creek

    When installing, will something come up to choose nomodeset? Do I choose that on the screen with all the choices?

    secuono; Sorry for the delay.
    Did not see your response timely.

    Been a bit since I have installed Lubuntu .. best I recall is about same same on the install, as in booting.
    Set "nomodeset" at the grub boot options screen, escape to revert to the install/try/ screen and choose install. The boot parameter will remain in effect. Once installed -> additional drivers utility will find and install the recommended driver(s) - IF you have a wired connection.

    Do you have a wired connection ? Though it is possible to update and install drivers later it is a major pain to do so.

    hope this helps

    Good, please mark the thread 'solved'.

    When you open a new one please begin with running

    Code:
    sudo lshw -sanitize > lshw.txt
    and posting lshw.txt in CODE tags.
    If you install Buntu 17.10 remember to download a new ISO file.

    Old ISO files might contain a bug which can damage UEFI hardware. Updating an existing installation and upgrading to 17.10 (if one has faith in upgrades in general) are safe.
