    installed kubuntu 11 (13 didn't work) but updates stopped with 200 installs to go. Working but icon titles are blacked. Billr

    You don't say whether you installed Kubuntu 11.04 or 11.10, but either way both those releases are beyond end-of-life. I'd be surprised if you managed to download any updates at all.

    If you were having problems with 13.04, then I would suggest trying to install 12.04, which is a long-term support release for which updates will be available until April 2017.

    One of the things that happens when a release reaches end-of-life is that the repositories that supply updates are turned off.

    Here is a brief snapshot of the release lifetimes ofUbuntu releases:

    The 11.10 release reached end-of-life in May, More here: Note that page contains a link to guidance on upgrading 11.10 to 12.04. However, I would recommend doing a clean install of the current 12.04.03 release to avoid potential upgrading hassles. ISO's are here:

    Kubuntu also has the 12.04.03 release.
