Caboose, no problem. It's funny because yesterday, after resetting Thunar, it was back up to speed. The problem didn't reoccur until this morning when I booted my computer. Thunar was slow again. I'll let you know if clearing the cache helps!

thunarrc.txt doesn't sound like a "legit" file and by "legit" I mean something that comes with Thunar or is created by the system. Such files are usually something.rc or somethingrc but not somethingrc.txt. For example, I have ~/.themes/MyGreybird/gtk-2.0/apps/thunar.rc.

I think vasa1 is right. I have a conventional Xubuntu install on this computer with Thunar 1.6.3 on it, and the contents of my ~/.config/Thunar/ folder is
    Code:
    ~$ ls -la ~/.config/Thunar/
    total 20
    drwx------ 2 slickymaster slickymaster 4096 Ago 20 09:31 .
    drwx------ 24 slickymaster slickymaster 4096 Set 16 12:13 ..

    -rw------- 1 slickymaster slickymaster 613 Ago 20 09:31 uca.xml
    just like him's.

Another possibility to approach is to prevent Thunar from using thumbnails. See this bug reports: https://bugzilla.xfce.org/buglist.cg...earch=tumblerd

My "vote" is for a clean Xubuntu 13.10 install in a month's time.

BTW, tumbler has a very nice /etc/xdg/tumbler/tumbler.rc with lots of options. But then again, I don't know if it's on systems with older versions of Xfce.

Would mine be as it is because I didn't initially install Xubuntu? I installed Xfce once I discovered I don't like Unity. Would that make a difference in the config file?

slickymaster, I will definitely look into that. Thanks.

Sounds good except that my husband is also a user on this computer and he likes his Gnome Classic. I'd ask if I could just update Thunar, but wouldn't it be better to update Xfce from 4.8 to 4.10?

I don't have /xdg/tumbler in my /etc, so you are correct about the older Xfce. Sounds like I definitely need to update.

    Re: Thunar slow as molasses

    Buntu Bunny; Hi !

    For consideration only ;
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...n/+bug/1104435
Please help testing Ricardo F. Teixeira's patched builds from this PPA:
    https://launchpad.net/~ricardo.teixa.../xfce4-session
    ...and provide feedback here:
    https://code.launchpad.net/~ricardo..../+merge/161735
Please be sure to test thoroughly.

The process to get the updated package would be:
    sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ricardo.teixas/xfce4-session
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get install xfce4-session=4.10.0-2ubuntu2~raring1 ppa-purge

    To remove this PPA:
    sudo ppa-purge ppa:ricardo.teixas/xfce4-session

note for "~raring1" research to see how to get the updated/patched application for your particular version of 'buntu.

Not only do you get the latest xfce4 -that I had expected to be in the archive by this time- but also the updated thunar (and all other packages).

    hey, it's a thought !

Bashing-om, thanks. It's curious that everyone else has at least the accels.scm and I don't.

Those details are very much appreciated, and I hear you about thorough research. Xfce 4.8 came with Xubuntu 12.04, but whether or not I can run Xfce 4.10 on 12.04 is what I need to look into. I confess I prefer to stick with the LTS versions for the time being. I'll have to see how well the current fixes last before making a final decision.

    Re: Thunar slow as molasses

    Buntu Bunny; Hey !

Looks like I may have been running headless way out in left field on my last. From my 12.04 install:
    sysop1@1204-a:~$ apt-cache policy xfce4
    xfce4:
    Installed: (none)
    Candidate: 4.8.0.3
    Version table:
    4.8.0.3 0
    500 http://ftp.utexas.edu/ubuntu/ precise/universe amd64 Packages
    sysop1@1204-a:~$
xfce4 version 4.10 + may be a stretch for ya ... hang on a bit and let me see what Lubuntu relates:

edit: Lubuntu 12.04 same same for what is available in the repository for xfce4 version.

    -----------------
As we are looking at what appears to be a config file not being generated .. recon what would result from:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install -f thunar
    or maybe reconfigure "thunar" ?
    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure thunar
Let the package manager do it's job ?

When I was on Ubuntu (not Lubuntu or Xubuntu) 12.04, I added xfce 4.10 which was that time available as a ppa. No problems at all.

    Re: Thunar slow as molasses

Things have gotten really strange. I booted my computer this morning and firstly noticed that the backgrounds for my desktop icons are now transparent. As I tried to make these out, I realised that my home folder is no longer displayed as an icon on my desktop [Edit: I now realise that none of my default icons are displaying on my desktop].

I opened Settings Manager to make sure Home was checked under Default Icons, it is. [Edit: all are checked] I also discovered that I cannot change my desktop wallpaper.

The only thing I knew to try was

    Code:
    xfwm4 --replace
    but that did nothing.

Thunar is no longer sluggish in opening files, but what happened???? Help?

A CLUE? I just right-clicked on my desktop and out of curiosity clicked "change desktop background". The box that popped up was not Xfce's Desktop Settings, but System Settings for Unity. Has Unity hijacked my desktop???

    P.S. @Bashing-om, here's what I got

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install -f thunar
    [sudo] password for buntu bunny:
    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
thunar is already the newest version.

Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
    Also tried

    Code:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure thunar
    No output, no change.

@vasa1, thank you for the feedback for Xfce 4.10 on Ubuntu 12.04. Since I installed Xfce for Ubuntu 12.04, it may work for me too.
