Take note of the values coming out of sleep (when the battery appears normal) and then again after the indicator reports "dead".
You can also get statistics graphs by clicking on the icon then click on the battery. Look at the statistics when working on battery for an hour and see if you get a linear decline in capacity during a work session. If you get wild swings in the data, then there may be something wrong with the battery contacts or the power circuitry that is causing dropouts in data and hence a "dead" warning.
