    Software Freedom Day 2013 Hong Kong

    Howard Chan writes that 21st September, 2013 is going to be Software Freedom Day and suggests that we should all celebrate Free and Open Source Software on that day. Howard adds that he will be hosting an Ubuntu booth and will be a speaker at a half-day event which is being held at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

    Kubuntu: September Updates to KDE SC

    The Kubuntu team have announced that KDE SC packages are available for Kubuntu 12.04 LTS, 13.04 and the development release and that packages for 12.10 will be available soon. The team provide instructions on how to install the update.

    The Fridge: Interview with Diane Leikvold

    In an article originally published in Full Circle Magazine, Emma Marshall interviews Diane Leikvold, a network administrator, desktop support, and technology coordinator at Longmont Christian School in Longmont, Colorado. Diane is asked how she discovered Ubuntu and about her role in transitioning the school to use Ubuntu, and says that she plans to start free Ubuntu training for the parents.

    Jonathan Riddell: Medibuntu to Disappear, libdvdcss now direct from VideoLan

    Jonathan Riddell writes that all packages, with the exception of libdvdcss, in Medibuntu have become unnecessary as they are now available in the Ubuntu archive or they have become obsolete. Jonathan says that Medibuntu will close down as libdvdcss is now available directly from VideoLan on their libdvdcss page on videolan.org.

    Lubuntu Blog: And the winner is...

    Rafael Laguna writes that the poll has ended with five wallpapers being voted as winners for the 13.10 release of Lubuntu and that there were 8495 votes coming from 1699 unique voters. Manuel Puentes, C Ayers, Luciash D'Being, George Blades Voulgarakis, Robert Wicek are all to be congratulated and all those who entered submissions should be thanked and applauded.

    Alan Pope announces some new scripts he has worked on to facilitate the testing of core apps. Glad that there has been a lot of activity among app developers, Alan also wishes to "automate the process" of trying out apps upon request.

    Grant Bowman: Touch Demo Preparation

    On his blog Grant Bowman writes about a demo he prepared of the latest daily build of Ubuntu Touch for the San Francisco Ubuntu Hour on a Nexus 7 device. Grant lists steps, commands, and scripts he will be presenting and applauds the Touch UI as a ground-breaking user experience.

    Join in UbuntuVoice: be the voice of millions of Ubuntu users

    Tingting Zhao writes that a user research network is being formed to organize the many user researchers Ubuntu has acquired over the past few years. It will be called UbuntuVoice. The post also notes that was so successful that the Ubuntu User Research Team met its target number quickly and can't accept more participants at the moment though they ask that anyone interested to send email to ubuntuvoice@gmail.com.

    Ubuntu the challenger?

    Mark Baker writes that Ubuntu is slowly emerging as a leader in the Linux server enterprise. In a review published by Network World, Ubuntu outshines the competition for its transparency, management tools, cloud capability, and virtualisation support. Although Ubuntu seems weak on the installation side, Mark expresses hope that this would be solved in the near future.

    Google's Driverless Cars are using a Lightly Customized Ubuntu!

    Manuel Jose of Tech Drive-In reports that Google's Driverless Cars are using a lightly customized version of Ubuntu version as their OS, a fact that was recently revealed at the Embedded Linux Conference 2013 conducted by The Linux Foundation. Manuel embeds a video clip of the event in his post.

    Ubuntu Crops Up In Mercedes-Benz Self-Driving Car Promo

    Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! points out that Ubuntu and its XFCE-flavoured sibling Xubuntu both feature in the newest Mercedes-Benz promo on YouTube. Joey says that Unity's familiar desktop layout can be seen at various points during the two minute embedded video.

    2D Performance Is Improving For Ubuntu 13.10 XMir

    Michael Larabel of Phoronix writes that while the OpenGL gaming performance on XMir/Mir was recently made faster the feature doesn't help out non-full-screen applications. Michael did a clean install of Ubuntu 13.10 on a Gazelle Professional laptop to check current 2D Linux desktop performance when using Intel graphics and enabling XMir and the Unity System Compositor, and points his readers to the results at OpenBenchmarking.org.

    Ubuntu continues to conquer the world, Ubuntu's Google+ community crossed 100,000 members

    razvi of iloveubuntu writes that months ago, Ubuntu received a dedicated official community on Google+, a social-network public zone allowing users, developers, designers and persons to share a wide and diverse range of topics. razvi says that recently, the Google+ community crossed the 100,000 members line, proving itself to be massively successful.

    Ubuntu's Server, Cloud Survey Reflects Trust in Private Clouds, OpenStack

    Sam Dean of OStatic reports that the Ubuntu team has published its annual Server and Cloud Survey results from more than 5,800 Ubuntu users of Ubuntu server and cloud, as well as general cloud usage patterns and preferences. Sam says that the research showed that there is a greater level of trust in cloud environments, including private clouds and trust in OpenStack, and quotes some statistics from the report.

    UbuntuVoice reached intended user target in one day

    razvi of iloveubuntu informs us that the Ubuntu designers recently announced the immediate availability of UbuntuVoice, an official user-experience network open for participation and that the intended user target was reached in one day.

    Ubuntu Developers Discuss Dropping ReiserFS

    Michael Larabel of Phoronix tells us that Ubuntu developers are presently deciding what to do with support for the ReiserFS file-system and that the discussion is about what to do with ReiserFS given that the file-system is losing popularity. Michael adds that it appears the developers want to keep the ReiserFS file-system module around, but that "they'd be okay with having the ReiserFS capability removed from the Ubuntu installer."

    Is '3' The Latest Member of Canonical's Carrier Advisory Group?

    Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! tells us that mobile network '3' appears to be the latest addition to Canonical's Carrier Advisory Group as the company's logo appears on the CAG section of the official Ubuntu website. Joey-Elijah gives us some information about '3' and says "If the addition of 3 is confirmed then it will be joining a 13-strong list of carriers who have shown interest in the fledgling upstart OS."

    Cloud tool Juju GUI 0.9 released

    razvi of iloveubuntu tells us that the Juju GUI has been updated to version 0.9 which introduces new features and extended support. razvi lists the changes and provides links that provide further information about the Juju GUI.

    German City Starts Distributing Free Ubuntu 12.04 CDs to Windows XP Users

    Joey-Elijah Sneddon of OMG! Ubuntu! reports that ahead of the severing of official support for Microsoft Windows XP next year, the German city of Munich have begun offering free Ubuntu 12.04 LTS CDs in select local libraries. Joey says that previously the Munich council gave some solid reasons for choosing Lubuntu over regular Ubuntu but according to Lubuntu member Nio Wiklund this change was brought about at the request of Canonical.
