    Unhappy Ubuntu does not detect router

    I have a wifi router at home, and I use ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop. The problem is that though the wifi works on the laptop, as in it detects wifi networks and connects to them, and it will detect the faintest of signals of wifi networks ffrom all over my building, it wont detect the wifi network at my home, with the router sitting less than 3 feet away.

    I can detect and connect to the wifi network using my phone and other windoors pc. so theres nothing wrong with the router. I occassionaly get ubuntu to detect the network by repeatedly restarting the laptop and the router, but thats just hit and trial and a whole lot of luck.

    What can the problem be? and how can i fix it?

    It might be helpful to provide some specs on both your wifi adapter and the router. There are a lot of folks on the forum with some impressive expertise, but they'll need something to go on.

    Do you always work with the router "just 3 feet away"? Because 'overgain' can also be a problem. There is usually a certain distance from the routers that is considered 'optimal'.

    If that is not an issue, you can try two things -

    1) Try changing the channel of your router to 1 or 11, and change the band to g-only or b/g-only mode (means disable N-channel if the router supports it). Seeing the result of "iwlist scan" part, it seems channel "1" should be best for you.

    2) Update your Ubuntu and simultaneously the "wl" driver to a higher version. The latest version of the "wl" driver is 6.30.223.141 which you can also download and install from here : http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...icted/b/bcmwl/ , but I suspect the installation may fail due to dependency issues unless you also upgrade the kernel.

    u nailed it bro. switched from channel 12 to 6. works like a german engine. thanks a bunch.

    Glad to hear that, although I fail to understand that

    As per your previous outputs, channel 6 is what you were already using (at Access Poing "Kakar" to which you were connected). I wonder if you meant "switched from channel 6 to 12".

    Also, Access point Kakar is what i was using to connect to the internet when my router was acting up... its my phone...
