    Screen Brightness Crash

I have been using Ubuntu since 12.04 and I never had this problem before. I had recently reinstalled windows 7 on my Lenovo Thinkpad T520. Now I decided to dualboot it with Ubuntu (I first tried 13.10, then 13.04 , then 12.10 and lastly 12.04). First off I have been getting a lot of crashes even before I can see the try/install screen (13.10,13.04,12.10) and the screen brightness is very dim. It crashes everytime i try to increase it by using the keyboard shortcut (Fn + Home) and also through the settings. By crashes I mean it freezes completely and I have to restart it (during which I keep getting errors and had to format and create a new Bootable USB (and no it didn't have persistence)). Is there anyway I can solve this?

Some system specifications would be helpful, like what graphics chipset does you system use?

I am not so sure, but I think it's NVIDIA NVS4200M with Optimus technology, 1GB discrete VRAM.
    it's a intel i7 sandybridge with 8 GB ram.
