Manually burning an ISO to a disk instead of using Startup Disk Creator?

Well, being a geek, I want to know how to manually burn an ISO to a DVD plus a USB. By manually, I do not mean using

dd if=/path/to/iso of=/dev/sdx

I mean manually mounting it, formatting it, creating a master boot record if I have to, and extracting each individual file to it. Is this possible? I found someone that did it to a usb but I know it will probably be different for a DVD. Can anyone help me?
