Thanks heaps!!! From a complete (and I mean complete) *nix noob, your instructions were easy to follow. I have about ~500 gb's between two hard drives that are both ntfs, so if it weren't for you I wouldn't be able to run ubuntu. Keep up the good work.

Re: HOWTO: NTFS with read/write support using ntfs-3g (easy method)

    Good work!
I only have one big issue with it. After I installed ntfs-3g my cd-rom stopped working, and gives me this error message when I try to accsess it:

mount: special device /dev/hdc does not exist

    Any ideas what causing it?
    thx

    everybody check '/var/log/messages'

    everybody check '/var/log/messages'
We are debugging a problem with Mr. Szaka(the creator of NTFS-3g) about this issue:
    http://forum.ntfs-3g.org/viewtopic.php?t=170
So I would like to kindly ask U UBUNTIANS if U could check the
'/var/log/messages' for any indication of the word 'ntfs-3g' and then report back to me.
Because myself and another UBUNTUIAN who is also using NTFS-3g we don't have any entries about NTFS-3g in '/var/log/messages' and now we are wondering if this could be an UBUNTU EDGY only issue.
    Thank U

ashrack, in my case, the NTFS partitions are mounted on boot, and the log is in /var/log/boot. However, if you unmount one of your NTFS partitions and then remount it, the startup and shutdown messages show up in /var/log/daemon.log:

    Code:
    Feb 3 16:49:22 fane-desktop ntfs-3g[3421]: Unmounting /dev/disk/by-uu
    id/D410603F10602B26 ()
    Feb 3 16:49:25 fane-desktop ntfs-3g[8235]: Version 0.20070118-BETA
    Feb 3 16:49:25 fane-desktop ntfs-3g[8235]: Mounted /dev/disk/by-uuid/
    D410603F10602B26 (Read-Write, label "", NTFS 3.1)
    Feb 3 16:49:25 fane-desktop ntfs-3g[8235]: Options: noatime,rw,silent
    ,allow_other,fsname=/dev/disk/by-uuid/D410603F10602B26
This is the result of unmounting/mounting my first NTFS partition:

    Code:
    sudo umount /media/hda1
    sudo mount /media/hda1
I also get the warning about the fuse module version being too old (I haven't installed a newer fuse module yet).

I'm using syslog-ng, but the configuration should (in theory) be equivalent to the stock sysklogd one included in Ubuntu, with a few modifications I've done (unrelated to ntfs-3g, at least I think). So, look in /var/log/daemon.log, too, just in case.

It is true that NTFS-3G makes previous read-only NTFS support redundant.
Note, however, that NTFS-3G is still considered BETA.

Which means that... If you can afford gambling on the stuff that's on the NTFS partition, by all means use it. It is unlikely that NTFS-3G will corrupt at this stage, but you know - there is a non-negligble chance that this would happen.

I am eagerly waiting for the first stable release of NTFS-3G. Until then, I am using read-only access to my NTFS partitions.
