The "we have root" quote is not literal. Masked goons from Canonical cannot SSH into your machine.

The point was that you already trust Canonical and Ubuntu to provide unpoisoned repositories, security updates, Ubuntu One storage cloud, Single Sign On service, IP geolocation server, and much more. If you participate in those services, then those servers already handle your login/password, approximate location, your cloud-stored pornography, the packages on your system, etc. A for-profit company bent on monetizing that data could learn a lot about you from those.

Anonymizing and monetizing your search queries requires user trust...and you are already trusting Canonical with a lot of data about you. You are not required to trust Canonical - you can easily disable or use alternatives for most services, nor are you prohibited from sending false or misleading information to those servers if you choose to use the services.

The simple fact that certain services are enabled by default (which you can disable) begs the question as to why some people feel the need to complain about something which there too lazy to fix themselves. Let alone know there's a solution for if they only looked.

PS. Recently and more alarming to read was a gov. paper I ran across describing the NSA's ability to breach security and it's roll in the development of OpenBSD. Acclaimed for it's security.
Since first finding the paper on a .gov site it has been since taken down. Thanks to the waybackmachine it can be retrieved.

Go Debian, after all, any improvements go back to Debian minus the spywares. In addition, what is the relationship of Ubuntu to Google??? Go figure. Ubuntu is insidious that it does't spy with in your face style, so newbie who objects would have no idea where to begin looking or googling. I will use my time for other stuff than to monkey with the os, no thank you ubuntu.

AFAIK, everything inside the default install(meaning everything you'd install if you don't click the 3rd party options that come up during the installation process ie, mp3 codecs, etc,etc,etc) is free software, and the source is publicly available.

I think the hair shirt RMS wears is so scratchy and uncomfortable that the wise things are greatly outnumbered by the FUD-ish. But he does sometimes get things right.

They have root huh? Just unplug your net. No more root control from them then haha. Seriously though, it is not to much to worry about, this is not like MS which gives everybody control to your computer through ActiveX. Or the fact they read everything you type on Skype. If it bothers you, turn it off, or make a switch to some other GNU/Linux. Like Gnuwsense or whatever it is called. But it really is not much to worry about I would think.
