Running processes, which ones, how many

I an a new user of Ubuntu, and it is working very well. I did a UNIX terminal command “ps -ef” and found about 250 processes running. I am concerned that in the process of learning, I have loaded and *NOT* unloaded software which needs to be cleaned up.

    1. Is there an easy way to determine what should and shouldn't be running? This, of course, depends on the software loaded.
    2. Is there a Ubuntu tool to help newbies clean up their machines?

    3. Should one expect this many processes?

Aforum search yielded a post by MikeCyber “what processes are normalon 13.04?” In his example, there are also a significant number ofrunning processes; however, his question and the answer is particularto a Union Bank process, and does not address the large number ofprocesses also running on his machine.

I have reviewed many other postswhich are unrelated to my question.

Re: Running processes, which ones, how many

I have 160 processes running in a 32-bit installation of Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS running lubuntu-desktop as found by

    Code:
     ps -ef|wc -l
The corresponding figure for a 64-bit installation of Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS running Unity is 166 (in another computer).

It could be perfectly normal with 250 processes, but if you are more specfic, you can get a better reply. How are you using the computer?

It will make a difference what computer it is (what hardware has drivers etc) and of course what services you have running. So please post the specification of your computer: Brand name and model, cpu, ram, graphics, network. And please post the list file that you get from the command

    Code:
    ps -ef > psef.txt
if there are no secrets there (for example: you can change the user name) or post the output of

    Code:
    ps -A > psA.txt
Please post the output between code tags like this

    [code]output[/code]

    to get output like this

    Code:
    output
I might not be able to give a good answer afterwards, but I think someone, who sees that information can.

You can install htop with the command line

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install htop
and run it in a terminal window.

    Code:
    htop

Re: Running processes, which ones, how many

I see that you have a lot of KDE stuff running. Do I understand correctly, that you have installed Ubuntu, and are running KDE kickoff desk top (not any 'standard Ubuntu' desktop like Unity)? In that case I think the high number of processes is because of that.

You could check if a clean Kubuntu install would result in fewer processes, but on the other hand, if your system is doing fine, I don't see any reason to worry.

    -o-

As usual, take backups regularly, so that you can at least restore all your personal files. If you don't want to reinstall your system, you should consider a full backup of your personal files as well as the system.

Edit: You can also install Ubuntu-Tweak according to this link

I'm not running kubuntu right now, but my ubuntu 12.04 has 159 processes. I'll kubuntu later on. For one thing, I noticed, you have "ibreoffice, klipper, dolphin" and several other programs running.

    I have disabled "
nepomukserver, akonadi, zeitgeist" on my system, so they are not running.

Ok, I'm on Kubuntu Saucy right now, and I have 144 processes. Several are from Chrome.

From your GRUB menu boot into a Rescue Console--which is a root terminal. Run htop and look through the processes--those would be the bare minimum for your setup. Be mindful that Chrome spins out a lot of threads (processes). Each tab is a jail and gets its own thread. Most linux machines will do OK until you get to around 4,000 processes, then things fall apart quickly.

Thanks everyone for spending time on this thread, I think looking forward i need the following:
    1) a link for a manual for "htop" describing the column meanings and etc. (perhaps a "top" is what i should search for)
    2) a link describing Ubuntu start up scripting.
With this info i think i can work on my own and if necessary request more information with a better description.

You can find a lot browsing the internet for htop tutorial for example

    http://xahlee.info/linux/linux_monitor_processes.html

    http://xahlee.info/linux/linux_monit...sses_htop.html

I'll pass on the second question.

I don't see anything out of line in that list you presented above. I'm using Kubuntu 13.04, and top reports I have about 235 processes running. You can see which processes belong to you in that listing above since they have user "kels" listed as their owner rather than "root."

To see the minimal number of processes you would use in a standard session, close all the programs currently running in the task bar, then reboot. After you log in, open Konsole and run "top". I'd bet you'll see a number in the 150-200 range even before running any desktop applications like Chrome or LibreOffice.

As for startup scripts, you should begin by reading about Upstart, Ubuntu's replacement for the traditional SysV init system used on *nix. You can also browse the scripts that came with your machine for hints about structure; they are stored in /etc/init.d/.

However many processes are managed by KDE itself, not Upstart. You can also specify scripts to run when KDE starts up using its Autostart functionality.

OP has processes for both Nautilus and Dolphin. Then there's zeitgeist and nepomuk (the KDE equivalent)? It's almost as if OP has two DEs going at one time. At least that's the impression I get going through the list.
