    3.11.0-031100rc6 is out

    Code:
    slickymaster@VirtualBox:~$ lsb_release -a && uname -r
    No LSB modules are available.
    Distributor ID:	Ubuntu
    Description:	Ubuntu 13.10
    Release:	13.10
    Codename:	saucy
    3.11.0-031100rc6-generic
    And finally the compilation of virtual box guest additions is fixed, so there's no more need to remove them to install new kernel versions.

    Re: 3.11.0-031100rc6 is out

    I often run the current release candidate (RC) on a 12.04 server computer.
    When compiling any non-english PDF version of the Ubuntu server guide, one of the programs crashes.
    It crashes with the Ubuntu version of 3.11RC6 and the kernel.org version of 3.11RC6.
    The compile finishes fine with 3.2.0-52.
    The last time I compiled a non-english Ubuntu Serverguide, was in March, and I might have used the standard 12.04 kernel then, so this
    issue could have been around for awhile.

    I did not. I went to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openjdk-6/ and quickly realized: There are over 600 open bug reports, some extremely old; Nothing seems to be getting done there; There are many similar crash type bug reports, and it would (will) take me many hours to find the correct one to add to, or to decide if I need to make a new one.

    Also, it isn't clear to me if the kernel change merely reveals a problem in openjdk that was always there or if the problem is really in the kernel itself.

    If I have the time, I thought I might try to narrow it down a little as to which kernel works and then which one doesn't.

    Re: 3.11.0-031100rc6 is out

    Many many kernel tests later... Here is an update on the issue:

    Kernel: Ubuntu 3.11 RC5 = No Problem (actually, all tested kernels <= 3.11 RC5)
    Kernel: Kernel.org 3.11 RC5 = No Problem
    Kernel: Ubuntu 3.11 RC6 = Problem
    Kernel: Kernel.org 3.11 RC6 = Problem

    Edit: I filed a bug report against the kernel. @runrickus: It would be great if you could confirm the bug report via clicking that it effects you also.

    Re: 3.11.0-031100rc6 is out

    I have a sneaking suspicion that 3.11.0-031100rc6 was built on a broken RC release.

    SOURCE: http://www.eweek.com/developer/linux...es-in-one-day/

    The stable Linux 3.10 kernel received not one, but two updates in the span of less than seven hours on Aug. 20, after a small development mishap....

    At 9 a.m. PT on Aug. 20, Linux kernel developer Greg Kroah-Hartman announced the 3.10.8 kernel update. At 3:44 p.m. PT, Kroah-Hartman announced the Linux 3.10.9 kernel.

    "What happened was that a patch that was reported to be broken during the RC [release candidate] review process, went into the release, because I mistakenly didn't pull it out in time," Kroah-Hartman told eWEEK. "So, I just did a new release with that patch removed."...

    A similar quick update was also made to the Linux 3.0.93 kernel, a few short hours after the 3.0.92 kernel was released. As is the case with the Linux 3.10 kernel branch, the Linux 3.0 kernel is also a long-term kernel release.
    It affected multiple releases.

    I'd be willing to bet our mainline kernel RC contains the bogus patch.
