Question I'm an Absolute Beginner! Where should I start?

    Hello Guys,

I am new to Linux/UNIX/Ubuntu, I built my PC a week ago and wacked Ubuntu on it, look I am not going to be a noob and ask whats this whats that, all I need is some useful starting content, PDFs, Commands etc.

I have Windows 8 running in Virtual Box, works like a charm.

    Thanks,

    Mustillo

To get your AV (audio/video) working, install the package 'ubuntu-restricted-extras'.

    Audio Video.

Here's a manual to get you into the basics of Ubuntu
    http://ubuntu-manual.org/

Here's another place to look for interesting stuffs
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NewDocs

And thirdly, in the sub-forums section of this thread(Absolute Beginners, for now at least) is a sticky thread on linux command line learning.
It has lots of links to tutorials and such.

Linux and Ubuntu have a cool feature that you can use to learn about various commands,
    It's called man
    open a terminal and run
    Code:
    man <command>
It'll open up a manual on how that command can be used, sometimes with examples.
    Try it out.

At first, when you said install the restricted-extras package I thought you meant anti-virus because of the ttf-mscorefonts-installer package.
    LOL!
    But I quickly understood.

Re: I'm an Absolute Beginner! Where should I start?

This is going to turn into a dog's breakfast as the question is way too broad.

I suggest you post separate threads with descriptive titles regarding each issue as it arises and in the appropriate sub-forums. For instance, for PDFs, and here you don't give us a clue what exactly it is about PDFs that is causing an issue, I would post about it in General Help. Just PDFs. Attempting to solve more than one support request, whether from the same poster or a hijacker, is confusing and decreases the chances of help.

This thread currently consists of random stabs in the dark as to what might/might not be the info required. It is going to get confusing and I doubt it will be particularly productive. As to where to start, well, you've started!

    Good luck.
