    Sound and Video issue on latest kernels - Ubuntu 12.04

    Hi,
    As the title mentions mys sound and video does not work on my ubuntu 12.04 if login on any kernel above 3.2.0-34-generic-pae. I have latest kernel on my system but if i login through this i have observed the following:

    If i try to play any video, the player just hangs and nothing happens.Eventually i had to force quit the player.
    My sound bar / sound icon shows as if no sound card available. I have tried configuring sound using alsa-mixer, but no change
    As above both cases are not working i have not checked for other issues, so not sure about them.

    Can someone suggest on how to fix these?

    Some info on the hardware that you are running might help get you some answers.

    Have you tried installing an even newer Linux Kernel?

    It might have been a regression bug that was fixed in a later Kernel Release.

    I had thought the same thing a had updated to latest kernel.But on each kernel boot i have same result, which is why it's very confusing.

    What are the Hardware Specs on your System? Especially the Audio and Video Hardware.

    Also what Audio and Video players are you using?

    It's still possible that it could be a regression bug.

    I have seen regression bugs go threw several maintenance releases before it gets corrected.

    And sometime it is an update that needs to be done on the software side. (Like VirtualBox with Linux Kernel 3.11)

    Do you know which Linux Kernel versions that you have tried and still had Sound and Video issues?

    I believe that Ubuntu 12.04 officially supports up to Linux Kernel 3.8.

    For Audio, i use clementine and rhythmbox
    For Video, i use default player
    As for kernel, i have tried until the current one..

    Any idea, how to resolve this?

    Please edit your post to use [ code ][ /code] tags

    It looks like like you have Realtek's Linux driver installed instead of the regular ALSA kernel module. This usually causes more problems than it solves, IMO, especially if you don't install it with dkms:

    It is worth trying the 3.5.0-40 kernel, or even the 3.8.0-30, both of which are available in the repos of 12.04, but will not be automatically updated if you installed 12.04 a long time ago.

    If you decide to do this make sure you also install the linux-headers and linux-headers-generic packagers of the same version number.
