    I don't see anything unusual between boots (other than lack of shutdown messages because it's instantly shutting off).

    Agreed.
    syslog seems to contain normal activity before the failure.
    kern.log shows the filesystem was not properly shut down. Lots of orphaned inodes.
    This means the system did not properly "shut down" or "reboot". It was depowered unexpectedly.

    You definitely have a hardware fault, not an Ubuntu or software failure.
    Some component in that machine (or it's power supply) is intermittently failing, and killing that system.
    Since failure kills the system instantly, there is no way to log a record of the failure.

    Get out your screwdriver and spare parts bin, and start substituting components....
