Thumbs down Most peculiar! DVD drive problems only in Windows!

Can anybody explain to me why my internal SATA Pioneer DVD re-writer fails to burn disks (on many occasions, but not 'always') in Windows 7, but will work flawlessly under ANY Linux distro?

Sure has me beat, but it's another win for FOSS over proprietry software!

    Bad Windows!

Could it be a software issue.
Try Imageburn in Windows, some report it works well.

You might have a virus, trojan or bloatware that is hogging your processor in Windows.

imgburn works wonders. I should probably reinstall it.. but so far the default image burning software has worked ok for me.

I would blame software tbh. If imgburn doesn't work, it could be the drive being picky with Windows (is that possible??)

I don't think so though, Task manager shows cpu usage hovering around 10% (with the browser running and verifiable background processes), and I do regular virus scans.

I'm going to give imgburn a go and see what happens.

No joy with imgburn, although it does report an IO error.

The drive is a Pioneer DVR-218L

So why am i not getting IO errors under linux with this drive?

I'd be inclined to replace the drive. Assuming you already reseated all the connections.

Don't know why the difference between WIN/LIN

It is a good DVD drive as it works in Linux, why not replace Windows instead?

Heh heh! It turns out that the drive* is known to have issues running under Win7 (good old google search) I updated the firmware to the latest version (2010) but saw no marked difference in performance under Windows, even after reseating all connections and dusting down the innards of my rig. It's a four year old drive now, so i'll stick with it until it dies and i get a new one.

I'll keep the 'doze too until i get up and running with music creation on linux, when i do i'll have no reason to keep dual booting on my desktop (all my portables are linux only now.
