There just don't seem to be any error messages that can help us. I do notice that you are using the opensource nouveau drivers. Have you tried enabling the proprietary nvidia driver?

Yes yes!! Installing the proprietary drivers solved the problem. Thank you so much for the tip!
Apparently I had these drivers active on 12.10 and didn't switch again after upgrading to 13.04.
