When I open certain apps(hydrogen, ardour) everything else seems to go haywire

When I open up Hydrogen or Ardour(these are the only ones I've noticed so far, and they are both audio based programs) many other things stop working. Mostly on the internet. Youtube videos won't play, facebook will open and then crash, and pandora will skip every song after 2 seconds and no sound will come out.
I believe there is a simple fix to this, but I know next to nothing and need help

What version and what flavour of Ubuntu r u using?

Make sure ur Audio System Tab as in that pages Figure 1.2 does not have Jack as default output if u dont use Jack...Ardour can also hav similar issues... That's only when I found that system sounds will not play. As for the crashing issue, i cant help, does ur system hav enough ram to support the applications?
