12.04 New Install on old dell laptop, no wired or wireless connection, Broadcom 44's

Greetings: I'm very new to Ubuntu & Linux, been bumbling around for a week trying to get this to work, so far nothing has gained me internet connectivity. It's for a Dell Vostro 1000, a dual boot with Windows XP home edition. Both wired and wireless work on the XP side without problem. The cable is plugged in, the router is fine. I only need one to work, it doesn't matter much which one, though both working would be nice.

    Thanks for any help!

Here's what I get with lspci:

    *-network

That's odd. Out of all things at least the wired connection should work without problems. What's the output of these commands?
    Code:
    ifconfig
    ifconfig -a
    iwconfig

for wireless is pretty easy, install "b43 fwcutter"
you need to get internet connection somehow. try the cellphone just to install b43 fwcutter

i have the same bcm 4311 as you. but i can say that fedora, centOS and pclinuxOS see the wireless out of the box.

as for wired.....i dont know,...mine works fine. maybe your ISP gives you the connection based on a certain MAC.

    later edit:
also, if you connect via cellphone, try to install wicd too. stop the network manager "sudo stop network-manager", start the wicd and try to get connected by wire.

Hi, let's see if we can get you up and running..
please copy and paste the following into a terminal..
    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
    then boot your computer
your wired connection should now be working.
from a wired connection please do..
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree
    sudo modprobe b43
    remove your wired connection
your wireless should now be working.
    post back any errors.

    from what i know,
    bcmwl-kernel-source
    is not installed by default.
from my experience, wired network should work by default, but sometimes, the network manager is a pain in the a$$. just few days ago i have had an issue with it, it just refuses to connect but in the same time, wicd works great.

    Hi folks,

obviously the user does not have any connection at all

Please download this package and save it in "Downloads":

    http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/...e_1.14_all.deb

    Installation/Uninstallation of the Broadcom-STA driver:
    Code:
    sudo dpkg -i ~/Downloads/linux-*.deb
    sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
    sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-bcm43.conf
    sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/broadcom-sta-common.conf
    sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/broadcom-sta-dkms.conf
    Reboot

I have this same problem with an old dell laptop (inspiron 9800) with same Broadcom unit when using 12.04. It works perfectly in 10.04 Lucid.

because in my case, bcm 4311, STA driver had worked fine in 10.04 or 10.10......but starting with 11.04 it does not work anymore, despite the fact that "additional drivers" gives me the option to install it.

Re: 12.04 New Install on old dell laptop, no wired or wireless connection, Broadcom 4

    @rrich1974...
the additional drivers..proprietary driver offer is
    broadcom-kernel-source.
that driver Blacklists the ssb module and b43.
B44 and B43 share the use of the ssb module...so
if the wired requires that and the wireless. you fail to connect,
in your case...most likely your wired connection does not use the b44 driver
but...your wireless..b43...bcm4311 does. Therefore loading the "additional driver"
loads the broadcom-kerne-source and kills your wireless. Apply my above guide
to remove the broadcom-kernel-source driver and then load the
linux-firmware-nonfree driver that your bcm4311 requires.

i have no problem myself since i use b43-fwcutter.
so, my wireless driver is b43.

i just want to say that broadcom-kerne-source is not installed by default.

it only installs if you activate "additional driver"
