Play encrypted DVD and run subtitle file

I have a German DVD with no subtitles. Can understand German but would like opportunity to add either English or German subtitles. Have found the English .srt file.

First though, Ubuntu cannot play the DVD as it is copy protected. I just wish to play it in Movie Player. I have searched for the decrypting codecs but whatever I have already installed it still won't play it.

Could anyone tell me where/how to get the codec to decrypt, and also whether it is possible to have the DVD play and access the subtitle file.

I have tried this on Mac OS X using VLC but the subtitles are way out of sync and not all of them appear.

Not sure about the subtitles but double check with these regarding playing. http://askubuntu.com/questions/500/h...ted-dvd-movies

Many thanks for the references. I had already tried the second, which didn't work, but the first one did.

VLC doesn't seem to play the disc very smoothly. The mouse pointer tends to disappear so you can't click on the DVD menu. Movie Player just got on with it.

I'm still looking for how to use the separate subtitle file simultaneously so as not to have to rip the DVD to merge it.
