SD cards don't work until reboot

So, I plug my SD card into the internal slot on my HP Mini running Lubuntu 12.04 (actually Zorin Lite, but it isn't really different at all). It works. I plug in an USB SD adapter into a USB port, it turns on. The Disk Utility shows the internal SD card and an empty USB reader. The reader has an SD card in it. Now, the reader is old and might be broken, I don't know. The problem is when I unmount my internal SD card, I cannot use any SD cards until I reboot, which is very annoying. The drives do not show up in the Disk Utility or GParted, and I have blindly attempted mounting /dev/sdb1, etc. but none work.

What I have tried:
"fdisk -l" returns my hard drive, nothing else.

In Ubuntu proper, you need to use "Eject" not "Safely Remove Drive" when un-mounting an internal card reader SD card. Otherwise, the internal SD reader can't be used until reboot. I'm not sure how/what it's called in Lubuntu/Zorin, but I'd look at doing it the same way there.

Interesting. What I did was unmount the two partitions on the drive and then use the Safe Removal button for the entire drive. Odd how it doesn't check if the drive is internal or something.

If you don't use the Eject option, Ubuntu assumes you will be re-inserting the same SD card again, or that there was simply an interruption in the reader connection. I have the same reaction on both internal SD card reader and external USB SD card reader.
As for why an internal SD reader works sometimes, but the external reader does not? Unknown. I have both and they work independently.
