Sony PS4 Priced at $399, Won't Require Online Connection

By Will Greenwald June 11, 2013 08:41am EST

Like Microsoft's Xbox announcement earlier in the day, Sony ended its press conference with one of the most important details: the PlayStation 4 will retail for $399 when it ships this holiday season.

This price tag puts the PS4 at a full $100 less than the Xbox One, which Microsoft revealed will get a $499 price tag when it ships in November.

The crowd roared when Sony head Jack Tretton stated outright that the PlayStation 4 will play used games. More specifically, Tretton explained that gamers who purchase a game on a disc will own that game for as long as they have that disc, and that the PS4 will not require an online connection to play single-player games and won't authenticate games online.

If it was backward compatible with ps3 games I could have considered buying at day one. For the rest, digital downloaded games cannot be exchanged and if those will cost less than disc versions I want to see what will happen in the future...

Neither is the Xbone. Backwards compatibility is not he be all and end all as it would cost more to implement. You still have your old console don't you? Then again they did mention something about previous games being available via the cloud but I dunno how that works.

Imagine how much better MS Windows would be if they dropped backwards compatibility years ago? Apple did it when they switched from PPC to Intel but provided an emulation layer for some time but that's gone these days.
