12.04 goes black screen before installation

I have an Asus N76VJ with an NVidia 635M graphics card. I've been trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 from Live USB, but after I get to the grub menu asking if I want to try, install, or check for defects, my screen goes black. I've been looking at multiple sites trying suggestions, but they didn't work. I've tried acpi=off, nolapic, nomodeset, noapic, and every combination of any and all of those choices. I'm also running Windows 8 and new. Can anyone help me on this?

Are you booting with the Intel video or the nVidia video chip in control. Does your UEFI/BIOS let you turn one or the other off?

Start with NVidia (I think), my UEFI does not let me select and, for some reason, is not accessible after turning on the laptop but through restarting through settings. Some time after this post, I found the 12.04 installation file I had from several months ago. I put it onto my usb but the uefi didn't recognize it anymore. I ran wubi.exe from my main os to install on another partition, but it's missing grub bootloader. Instead of starting up, the computer showing the attachment.

I just checked and it can read the USB again so I'm going to remove the partition, readd it, and see what then.

That is AWESOME! I followed the second link and read what the other person did. Disabled the secure boot and viola! Ubuntu is working! Thank you, oldfred. You are a life saver!
