Re: 12.04 update - Grub - keyboard and mouse freeze

    Hi Bashing-om

Just to keep you up to date.
With the loan of an extra external hdd I have managed to back up 98% of data.
Some important music (2000 files) would not transfer because of having strange characters.
So I'm half deciding to try the re-partitioning method rather than the re-format.

But today has been full on with work demands and crises ... I can't see me having the relaxed clear space until tuesday am. i am in Barcelona Spain some 7 hours ahead of you. So I will come to it later.

    Thanks again

Re: 12.04 update - Grub - keyboard and mouse freeze

OK I did all the Gparted stuff in your post number 18 - all fine.
I now have sdb with two ext4 partitions
    - File storage .... with all my original data intact (thank you so much)
    - /Data
    and some unallocated space

I removed the live stick and rebooted.
It found the boot on sda and is up and running... 12.04 with an old version of my data (sda data)
Update manager still says it is 405 days since last update and seems to be looking for 10.10

This time I now have access to the keyboard in grub.

I will now try back in grub to see if I can find my up to date 12.04 version and sda data ... on the previous linux version .... and run an update from there

Re: 12.04 update - Grub - keyboard and mouse freeze

    The grub menu shows:

    Grub 1.99-21 ubuntu 3.9
    ubuntu linux 3.2.0-48 generic

then all the previous linux versions were on /dev/sdb so now are not available
ubuntu linux 3.2.0-45 generic on /dev/sdb ((versions back to 3.2.0-40 appear))

So I must have been running linux from sdb without being aware of it.... maybe since installing the second hard drive just over a year ago!

Trying to run update Manager it tells me

Re: 12.04 update - Grub - keyboard and mouse freeze

    Normand; Making good progress !

    Presently we are faced with two issues;
    1) The data base for updated file acquisition
    2) Getting grub updated

My priority is the data bases, to that end let us remove the sources for Mozillia/FireFox... can you recall why they are there ? As FF is fully supported out of the repositories ?I am not aware of a current need to resort to launchpad's ppa.
    Post the output of:
    Code:
    cat /etc/apt/sources.list
    ls -la /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
With the data base correct we can then get the files we need for grub's installation. I hope easily without resorting to purging the present grub. I have resorted to purging before... but that method permits no errors and NO interruption to power( kids, cats and thunderstorms), even that can be overcome !

Task at hand: fix the sources list.
I will be away from the keyboard for several hours, will check back in asap.

    move'n on smartly

    Normand; Ok I am back...
done a bit of research... mozillia on thunderbird is still supported... the "precice" entries you may untick.... we want the "natty" ones gone for good.
AND in the /etc/apt/sources.list FILE we want to "comment" out and/or remove one line.
Also prior prudent planning to make a backup of any file to-be edited first ...never can tell what might happen ...huh //

    ## or updates from the Ubuntu security team.
deb http://es.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-backports main restricted universe multiverse
    ## deb-src http://es.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ maverick-backports main restricted universe multiverse
the "maverick-backports", unless you have a real good reason to use the old archives, do away with it.

Do the above and should have the package manager ready for business//
    Then fire for effect:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
When that runs good... gonna go grub'n

simple as falling off a log ..but, we want to fall to the right

Re: 12.04 update - Grub - keyboard and mouse freeze

    Good Morning Bashing-om

    done:
    sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
All fine, no problems. Update Manager is now happy. Now trying to recover audio ... following Sound troubleshooting threads.

On fire up this morning all the old grub lists for sdb have gone. Maybe this has sorted itself!

    Questions remaining:

    1. This is an AMD 64 system but the update listing (and when trying to repair sound) it is also loading i386 stuff. I had previously taken out any mention of i386 in the sources.list file .... but the system is still loading it in apt get update (for example). Not sure if this is creating problems.

    2. The original "cause of the problem" in this thread .... that the system loaded and was running ubuntu on sdb (without me being aware of it) .. then the freeze up on the updates of 31 May. Not sure if this car re-occur.

Thanks again for all your help
