  1. #1

    ~/.xsession-errors no longer used

At least seems that way, gets 2 lines & that's it.

It appears the equivilant is now in ~/.cache/upstart/gnome-session.log

hm, your system is a few steps ahead mine
i'm logged with GS 3.9 and xsession-errors is inside /home as usual and is slowly growing; and there is no ~/.cache/upstart/ folder here ( that system installation is standard)

have you logout/in to test that issue ?

And just to note - it doesn't rotate, just appends to. Initial was about 5.2kB, grew to over 500 quickly (synaptic spams the heck out of it as it did previously with .xsession-errors.
Shows status in ~/.cache/logrotate on day, maybe it rotates daily??

Your configuration is completely different from mine's. Could it be due to the fact that I'm on Xfce desktop?
    Here's mine:

    I would guess so...

Manually advanced the date, logged out/in & all the logs were archived, then after 1st. action a new log was created - screen

    Re: ~/.xsession-errors no longer used

In my case I think .xsession-errors is archived at every reboot, with the previous version renamed to .xsession-errors.old and a new log created in its place.

I'm probably telling you guys what you already know but of course if you are using gdm then ~/.xsession-errors is not used. Gdm now writes session messages to ~/.cache/gdm/session.log.

I'm using lightdm, overall seems better as more localized logs
(if in fact this is intended vs. an anomaly or something in between
