New machine: what to install

Just purcahsed 3.2Mhz quad core with 8 gig RAM. The highest graphic use I have is for Flight Simulator and Torcs. Would I be better to install the 64 bit version or the 32 bit Ubnuntu? Is Torcs and Flight Simulator available in 64 bit from the repostories?

According to the their website TORCS is compatible with 64 bit.

Flight Simulator website appears to be no longer active, but I'm sure there's a flight simulator out there that is compatible with 64 bit systems.

32-bit won't use more than 3.2 gb of ram, unless you have PAE installed. 64-bit will use all 8 gb, and it will go faster than 32-bit because it is chunking more information at one time.

what flight simulator? Flight Gear i believe has 64 bit version. even if it's not 64bit it works with 64bit.

anyway use 64 bit with that combo. i mean why would buy powerfull CPU then criple it? it's a waste of money.

Sounds like a fun rig to run Ubuntu on!
My only advice would be to apply an Ubuntu badge on the case!
They sell them at ZaReason. 2 for a dollar.
I have them on my computers and it makes me happy.
Of course, tearing off those crummy Windows badges made me happy also.

Last time I checked flightgear was available from the repo's. It's free and open source, they have a nice website where you can get additional data or you can order 6 DVDs of scenery. The only downside is that they didn't modify the aircraft to make things easier for beginners.

but they do have a nice manual for beginners and i was up in air in no time. though i still can't fly using instruments i can fly using visual/scenery. and have succesfully taken off and landed (well at least mostly). i really hate it when i have a longer flight and then mess up the landing...
