How to Become Maintainer of an Abandoned PPA

Forgive me if this is in the wrong sub-forum, but I was wondering what one can do about taking over a PPA that seemingly has been abandoned and the original maintainer does not respond to emails.

The last update of the PPA (syspeek) was released on 2011-10-24 when the package was released for oneiric and there hasn't been an update since. I have ported the source to vala and would like to take over as maintainer.

    Thanks

if the maintainer does not respond, why not fork it?

I did some snooping on Google and within Launchpad to see how to fork the project. Unfortunately, it appears that since I am not an authorized member of the PPA, I it appears I can't fork the project. It also may be because I'm so new to this.

What is the procedure for doing this?
