    Laptop battery won't charge

First, I don't have enough posts to edit my profile so I want it to be known that I'm actually running 12.04 64 bit. Now on with the question. I recently posted in the hardware section about wanting a new laptop because of a hardware problem with my current one, a 3.5 year old HP Pavilion DV7. The problem is that when the laptop is plugged in it will hold a charge but not actually charge the battery. I've tried a new battery and a new charger. I tried putting it in my husband's laptop (same model) and it charges. The only difference is that my husband is running Windows 7. It occurred to me that since my husband is running Windows, the problem may lie with Ubuntu. I'm guessing it's a hardware issue, but I don't want to go out and buy a new laptop if this one can be fixed or if it's an OS issue. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you shut down the OS with the charger plugged in and the battery still doesn't charge in a couple hours then you've eliminated the OS question.

Yeah, I left it off and plugged in all night long with no luck.

Maybe a stupid question, if you unplug your power supply and temporarily use hubbie's battery does your laptop function?

Another question - if you remove the battery completely and just use the laptop with power supply does it function normally?

The new battery you purchased does work correctly in hubbie's laptop?

    Re: Laptop battery won't charge

The answer to all three of those questions is yes. Right now I'm using the laptop plugged in, which is most inconvenient because I'd like to be able to use my laptop without it being plugged in. So it's not like I need a new laptop this second since this one functions with the charger, it's just inconvenient.

I suspect from your answers that the internal charging circuit is defective. One temporary option us swapping a charged battery from your hubbie's laptop to yours since you now have 3 batteries.
Long term your probably going to either repair the laptop or purchase another.

    Re: Laptop battery won't charge

I managed to solve the problem with a fix I found on an HP support forum. I don't know how or why this worked but it did. I will copy and paste the fix I found in case anyone else runs into this problem.

    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Remove the power cord.
    3. Remove the battery.
    4. Hold the power button down for about 10 seconds.
    5. Reconnect battery.
    6. Reconnect power cord.
    7. Start computer back up and see if it's fixed. May need to wait a minute or two to see that the charge is increasing as it should.
