    feddozz;

There is no better way to administer the packages than with the Debian package management tools, apt-get, dpkg or aptitude, one may use the GUI front ends of these tools but, bottom line apt-get and dpkg get the job done.
apt-get clean command clears out the local repository of retrieved package files. It removes everything but the lock file from /var/cache/apt/archives/ and /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/. When APT is used as a dselect method, clean is run automatically. Those who do not use dselect will likely want to run apt-get clean from time to time to free up disk space.
To clear the cache from the command line, type the following:
    Code:
    sudo apt-get autoclean
    sudo apt-get autoremove
    sudo apt-get clean
Finish up and see what the status is:
    Code:
sudo apt-get update #resync package index
sudo apt-get upgrade #newest versions of all packages, update must be run first
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade ## does a "smart" update and maybe deal with the "linux-headers-3.2.0-41-generic-pae_3.2.0-41.66_i386.deb"
    ##/and install held back packages,
That I expect to straigten out the package manager's data base and config files. Then If errors still we can look at the individual packages and see what can be done.

Post the errors if any after the "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" command.

    just what I think

I tried the commands but it did not work , here is the result
    Code:

    sudo apt-get autoclean

You might want to run ‘apt-get -f install’ to correct these.

Re: Can't update/install. Disk seen as full

    feddozz; Making good progress.
With the exception of "linux-headers-3.2.0-41-generic-pae_3.2.0-41.66_i386.deb" all is in good shape. Presently I am a bit uncertain as to what is going on as I am running 12.04 fully updated and my 64 bit version is an older version than what is to be installed on your system (32bit the difference ?).
    sysop1@1204-a:~$ uname -rm
    3.2.0-41-generic x86_64
    sysop1@1204-a:~$
    In any event lets see what version image/architecture you presently have installed;
Please post your out put of :
    Code:
    uname -rm
    before proceeding with removal/(re)install.

    feddozz:
And here you go ; Terminal codes:
    Code:
    sudo dpkg --remove linux-generic-pae
    sudo apt-get install linux-generic-pae
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
    //
Removing linux-generic will do no harm at all. It is only a "meta-package" depending on linux-image-generic and linux-headers-generic. Those two are themselves meta-packages depending on the respective latest image/headers packages.

You can see this for yourself by issuing apt-cache show linux-generic, apt-cache show linux-image-generic and apt-cache show linux-headers-generic.

The purpose of meta-packages is to pull-in the packages on which they depend, they have no functionality at all. On the other hand removing one will not remove it's dependencies - so no danger to the system.

After having fixed the original issue<which you have done> you can of course install linux-generic again.
I expect all is in good shape now ??

still learning after all these years

    Hi
    still not sorted
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install linux-generic-pae
complains. I'll post the error messages.

You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies.
     linux-generic-pae : Depends: linux-image-generic-pae (= 3.2.0.43.51) but 3.2.0.41.49 is to be installed

OK it looks like i have found the problem. i run out of inodes although i don't know what they are

    Code:
    sudo df -i

    /dev/sda1 610800 609534 1266 100% /

    none 191838 4 191834 1% /run/shm
    /dev/sda6 1718848 13695 1705153 1% /home
    Any help?

Re: Can't update/install. Disk seen as full

I managed to reduce the usage of inodes to 44% using the following
    Code:
     for i in `find . -type d `; do echo `ls -a $i | wc -l` $i; done | sort -n
I run it first on the root folder /, then i run it in the folder with the largest numer of files
Is 44% a reasonable level? Or should i keep looking for files to delete. My problem is that I don't know what's needed and what's not.

    use:

    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
    or install that package directly:
    Code:
    dpkg -i linux-headers-3.2.0-41-generic-pae
