have to log out before I can get to shutdown icon gnome3

When I want to shut down my 12.04 system I have to click on log out and wait for the login screen before i can select shutdown
I am not running unity but gnome 3.
Anyone know how I can get directly to shutdown option as I used to be able to?

Switch the Alternative Status Menu extension on. GNOME Shell is great but hiding this option was a silly design choice which they have rectified (a little!) in later versions of GNOME Shell. In your version, you were expected to "discover" that you can press the ALT key while in that user pull-down menu to get the power off option, which is ridiculous.

Great thanks, I have just been trying different options and installed qshutdown and put an icon on my desktop.
This is at least a more practical way to do it for now.
Yes I agree it is an absolutely crazy thing to hide the option.
